Hedgehope School is a full rural primary school with a passion to inspire students from Years 1-8. We are located in Central Southland on the Winton-Hedgehope Highway, a 20-minute drive from Mataura, Winton or Invercargill. Our beautiful rural setting is located not far from the Community Hall, Rural Fire Brigade and Golf Course. At Hedgehope School, learning is grounded in opportunity, nature and community, guided by our core REACH values — Respect, Endurance, Adventure, Compassion and Happiness. These values shape who we are, how we learn, and how we support one another every day.
We are proud of our outstanding school grounds, which provide rich opportunities for exploration and growth. Our environment includes an orchard, chickens, a thriving plant nursery, hot house, tennis courts, a huge school field, a mountain bike track, a giant sandpit, a newly refurbished playground, workshop and our much-loved Treemendous adventure playground. These spaces are living classrooms where students show Adventure in their learning, Endurance in challenges, and Happiness through active, engaged play.
Inside the classroom, learning is future-focused and well supported. Our senior students benefit from 1-to-1 Apple MacBooks, encouraging creativity, collaboration and independence. Our highly experienced staff lead learning with Respect and Compassion, ensuring every child is known, valued and supported to succeed.
Hedgehope School is strengthened by a caring and connected community. Our active PTA fundraises to support student needs and enrich learning opportunities, while our passionate Board of Trustees provides strong governance and strategic direction, ensuring all students are supported to REACH their full potential.
We are proud to be a top-tier Enviroschool, holding Green-Gold status — the highest level. Through our Forest School programme on Channel Road, students develop Respect and Compassion for the environment by predator trapping and environmental restoration, and they bring this real-world learning back into the classroom.
At Hedgehope School, children are encouraged to REACH for greatness — growing as confident, capable learners in a school where values, nature and community come together.
Throughout the year, the students excel in athletics, swimming, touch rugby, cross country, netball, speech competitions and thrive at school camps, pet day, ski trips, winter sports days, science fair, technology challenges, and much more.
I look forward to getting to know your whole family and supporting you to enjoy our school and community. Please contact me or any of the staff at school, we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Kind regards,
Daniel Withington

Dear Parents/Caregivers,
We hope you all had a relaxing break and enjoyed spending time connecting with family and friends. It’s great to be back, and we’re excited for the term ahead starting tomorrow.
This term, we will be sharing fortnightly newsletters to better celebrate and showcase the amazing learning happening in our classrooms. We’re looking forward to keeping you more regularly connected with school life.
A warm welcome to Jenn Remolazo and Anna Grant, who have joined our team as school cleaners. We’re pleased to have them on board, supporting our school.
Our students in Tūī and Kererū classes are heading off to Omaui Camp this week—an exciting opportunity for learning, challenge, and connection outside the classroom. A big thank you to our parent volunteers for giving their time to support this experience, and to the funds raised through the nursery, which have helped to subsidise the camp and make it more accessible for our students. This camp will be epic! Meanwhile, our Pīwakawaka class will have the unique experience of having the whole school to themselves from Wednesday to Friday—we’re sure they will make the most of it.
During Term 2, we intend to increase our presence and action in Sherwood Forest, and we would love your support. We will be heading into Sherwood on selected dates throughout the term. If you are willing and able to help us out, please fill in the Skool Loop form on the app.
As Anzac Day (25th April) approaches, we are looking for volunteers to place a wreath on behalf of Hedgehope School at the Winton dawn service. Wreath bearers will need to be in school uniform and present at the Band Rotunda between 6:50–6:55am. If your child is interested in representing the school, please get in touch.
We also have two important meetings coming up:
Hedgehope School Board of Trustees Meeting – 28th April, 7:00 pm in Kererū Class
PTA Meeting – 4th May, 7:00pm in Tūī Class
Kind regards,
Daniel
Hi All,
Please find the final camp notice for camp that went home with children at the end of the day today.
Kia ora whānau,
We are excited to share that casting for our school production of Alice the Musical has now been finalised. Thank you to all students who showed enthusiasm and courage in putting themselves forward—auditioning takes confidence, and we are very proud of everyone who gave it a go.
Our production is a whole-class/school effort, and every student has an important part to play. Whether performing a lead role, supporting role, or as part of the ensemble, all students will be involved on stage and contributing to making this a fantastic show.
Please find attached the cast list outlining each lead and supporting roles. We have carefully considered each student’s strengths, confidence, and opportunities for growth when making these decisions.
We are really looking forward to seeing students develop their skills, confidence, and teamwork as we work towards our performance.
Thank you for your ongoing support—we can’t wait to share the finished production with you!
Ngā mihi,
The Hedgehope School Board is pleased to share our 2026 Strategic Plan, which sets a clear direction for strengthening student learning, well-being, and community connection across our school.
As part of developing this plan, we undertook community consultation to ensure our priorities reflect the aspirations of our families and wider community. We received valuable feedback, with three clear areas of focus emerging from survey results: Academics, Sport, and Enviro Schools. These priorities underpin our strategic direction for 2026. The plan has three clear pathways.
What (Our Expectations):
How (What We Will Do):
Measurement (How We Will Know):
The Board will regularly review progress against these priorities and ensure that resources are aligned to support our goals. We look forward to working together with our school community to make 2026 a successful and rewarding year for all.
Parents, please support our local businesses
